Poll: Mexican president's approval falls to 12 percent
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto's approval rating has fallen to a historic low of 12 percent, according to a poll published Wednesday.
The Grupo Reforma poll was conducted Jan. 11-15, after Mexico's government announced 20 percent hikes in fuel prices that triggered widespread protests and looting.
When asked which party they would vote for in presidential elections, 27 percent chose the leftist National Regeneration Movement, up five percentage points from December. Pena Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party fell five points to 17 percent.
The poll of 1,000 adults has a margin of error of four percentage points.
An August poll by the Reforma newspaper put Pena Nieto's approval rating at 23 percent. At the time it was the lowest for any Mexican president since the paper began polling 21 years ago.
