Poll: Melania Trump sees approval increase, but she's not quite as popular as Michelle Obama

First lady Melania Trump appears to be getting more popular, according to a new Rasmussen Reports poll released Wednesday.

Fifty-three percent of those polled said they had at least a somewhat favorable view of the first lady, which is an 8 percent increase from those who felt the same shortly after the 2016 presidential election. Thirty-six percent of participants answered that they held an unfavorable view of Trump and 11 percent were listed undecided.

Trump's performance is relatively similar to that of predecessor Michelle Obama during her final year as first lady. However, both don't hold a candle to Laura Bush's whopping 75 percent nearing the end of her husband's presidency, despite the poor approval ratings of the 43rd president himself.

Other results from the poll indicated that 81 percent of Republican voters had a favorable view of Trump while 57 percent of Democrats had an unfavorable view of the first lady. Half of Independent voters viewed her favorably whereas 44 percent felt otherwise.

The question of whether the former Slovenian model is a good role model as first lady also had voters evenly divided, with 40 percent answering yes, another 40 percent answering no, and 20 percent of those who answered listed as undecided. Obama scored relatively higher in 2016, with 56 percent of voters saying yes.

And only 21 percent of voters think Trump has a say in policy decisions, which is a far cry from the 56 percent who shared the same stance about Obama in 2016.

The Rasmussen Reports poll surveyed 1,000 participants from Nov. 28-29. According to the survey, the margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points with a 95 percent level of confidence.
