Poll: Biden maintains clear lead over Trump nationally

A Fox News poll released Thursday shows former Vice President Joe Biden leading President Donald Trump by 7 percentage points nationally, indicating a steady lead for the presumptive Democratic nominee that is essentially unchanged since July.

The new poll shows Biden in front of Trump 49 percent to 42 percent among registered voters. In July, the Fox News poll had Biden up over Trump by 8 percentage points, holding 49 percent support compared with Trump’s 41 percent.

Biden continues to run ahead of the incumbent because of his superior favorability ratings. While Biden holds a 10 percentage point favorability advantage, 53 percent to 43 percent, Trump is underwater by 12 points. A majority of registered voters, 55 percent, view the president unfavorably and 43 percent have a favorable view.

Democrats also hold a favorability edge when it comes to the bottom half of the ticket.

The Fox News poll was conducted from Aug. 9 to 12 and over half the interviews were completed after Biden selected Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) as his vice presidential pick.

The poll finds 44 percent of voters view Harris favorably while 40 percent view her unfavorably. Vice President Mike Pence, on the other hand, is viewed favorably by 41 percent of voters and unfavorably by 51 percent.

A majority of voters, 54 percent, disapprove of Trump's job as president. More voters trust Trump to handle Biden on the economy by a margin of 4 percentage points.

The race has tightened since June, when Fox News found Biden had a 12-point advantage over Trump, 50 percent to 38 percent.

The Fox News poll was conducted by phone Aug. 9-12 among 1,000 registered voters nationwide. Results from the full survey have a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
