'A United Kingdom' Trailer: Interracial Love Sparks Political Tensions

Interracial marriage will be one of the upcoming movie season’s hottest topics, thanks in large part to Jeff Nichols’s Loving (Nov. 4) — the story of the U.S. case that struck down the nation’s anti-miscegenation laws — which received significant acclaim when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May. A similar tale will follow in A United Kingdom, directed by Amma Asante (Belle) and starring David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike, now represented by its first trailer (watch it above).

A United Kingdom tells the real-life story of Seretse Khama (Oyelowo), the prince (and then king) of Botswana, who met and fell in love with London office worker Ruth Williams (Pike) in 1947. Their union not only threw both of their lives into turmoil, but — in the wake of South Africa’s recently instituted apartheid policy — threatened to destabilize the political relationships of both their home nations.

With Oyelowo again in the role of a national leader (after his turn as Martin Luther King, Jr. in 2014’s Selma), and Pike taking on a far less fearsome part than in 2014’s Gone Girl, A United Kingdom will look to stir the hearts and minds of moviegoers with its against-all-odds romantic tale when it premieres at next month’s Toronto International Film Festival ahead of its Nov. 25 release in the U.K. A U.S. release date has not yet been finalized.
