Polish opposition leader Kaczynski warns of agricultural threats from EU Green Deal, Ukrainian imports

The introduction of the EU's Green Deal program in Poland will lead to the destruction of Polish agriculture, the leader of the Polish opposition party Law and Justice (PiS), Jaroslaw Kaczynski, said on April 27, according to news agency Ukrinform.

He also believes that the opening of borders to imports from Ukraine will have the same consequences.

"We are going to the European Parliament to reject the Green Deal in its current version," Kaczynski said during a speech at the party congress in Warsaw.

“It harms Polish agriculture and practically leads to its elimination. I can also add that – although this is not part of the green course – the same elimination (of agriculture – ed.) can be achieved by opening our borders to imports from Ukraine.”

Blockade of the Ukrainian-Polish border

Polish protesters began to restrict traffic on the border with Ukraine on Feb. 20. Trucks were blocked at the Medyka-Shehyni, Dolhobyczow-Uhryniw, Zosin-Ustyluh, Korczowa-Krakivets, Hrebenne-Rava-Ruska, and Dorohusk-Yahodyn checkpoints.

The blockade of the border was accompanied by political provocations and damage to Ukrainian agricultural products.

The European Parliament Committee supported on March 7, 2024 the extension of duty-free trade for Ukraine.

On the same day, Ukraine announced that it was ready to restrict trade with the EU, but on its own terms.
