‘Street takeover’ warning by police in this local city

AKRON, Ohio (WJW) — It’s a “hazardous” trend that’s picking up steam across the county and now in Akron. What police call “pop-up-car takeovers” are on the rise in Akron.
“In recent weeks, a series of pre-planned car takeover events have been taking place across the City of Akron,” Akron Police Department Captain Michael Miller said.
The street and parking lot takeovers are often advertised on social media and draw between 25 to 40 vehicles, according to law enforcement.
Police describe car/street takeovers as groups of drivers meeting at the same parking lot or street and spinning cars while screeching tires, doing stunts, and roaring engines all while dangerously close to crowds.

“This activity poses a significant public safety risk. The participants drive recklessly, block traffic, creating hazardous conditions that could lead to potential accidents and injuries,” Miller said.
Miller said three separate car takeovers took place between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Saturday, which led to several arrests and a police pursuit.
“The vehicle, driven by a 16-year-old male, accelerated, ran a red light, and went around other cars. The driver attempted to elude police by driving down a side street before returning to the parking lot and eventually striking a pole,” Miller said.
Police say street takeovers have killed innocent bystanders around the country in recent years, including in California.

“The Akron Police Department, state and local law enforcement partners remain committed to enhancing public safety. We intend to work collaboratively with these agencies to respond to and vigorously enforce related laws to deter this hazardous behavior,” Miller added.
