A 62-year-old woman has died from a stray bullet after police say a shooting broke out in the neighborhood Monday evening.

The name of the woman was released Tuesday.

According to a press release from Shelby Police, Sarah Chambers, who lived on Live Oak Street, was killed after an altercation she was not involved in led to gunshots being fired.

Police said on Monday, at 7:45 p.m., officers from the Shelby Police Department responded to the 600 block of Live Oak Street in reference to reports of gunshots being fired in the area.

Once on scene, officers found Chambers lying in the front yard of a home suffering from a single gunshotwound, according to a press release.

Cleveland County Emergency Medical Services and medical first responders responded to the scene and transported Chambers to Atrium Health – Cleveland where she was pronounced dead.

The Shelby Police Department Criminal Investigations team continues to actively investigate the incident. At the time of the release, no arrests had been made.
