Police: Standoff ends peacefully after Ashland man threatens to harm himself, family

ASHLAND – A roughly four-hour standoff ended peacefully Sunday after police took into custody a man they said tried to hurt himself and his family.

Officers responded to a complaint at 3:53 p.m. in Silverstone Lake Estates, where the 37-year-old was found under the trailer's foundation.

According to a news release the man was holding a knife to his throat and warned officers to stay away.

The release further states officers surrounded the trailer and continued talking with the man. He eventually made his way back into the trailer where officers continued to negotiate a peaceful resolution.

The Ashland Special Response Team and hostage negotiators assisted. After about four hours, the man surrendered the knife and was taken into custody without physical confrontation.

He was transported to the Ashland County Jail on charges of aggravated menacing, domestic violence and disorderly conduct.

The man pleaded not guilty to the charges in Ashland Municipal Court on Monday, according to court records. His bond is set at $50,000. He's also not allowed to have contact with the alleged victim.

The Ashland County Sheriff's Office and State Highway Patrol assisted police.
