Police: Shots fired at vehicle driven by off-duty Detroit police officer on I-94

A car driven by an off-duty Detroit police officer was struck by gunfire Monday in what the Michigan State Police is describing as a road rage incident.

The 22-year-old male officer was driving westbound on I-94 near Vernier at about 12:30 p.m. Monday when another driver "began road raging with him" by throwing bottles and other objects at his vehicle, MSP posted on Twitter.

Then, when the off-duty officer got near Gratiot, the officer heard a pop and discovered his vehicle had been hit by gunfire, police said.

"The suspect then exited at Gratiot," MSP said. "No one was struck by the gunshot and the off duty officer did not fire his weapon."

The westbound lanes of the freeway were closed for a time as part of the investigation, which is continuing.

“There is absolutely no reason to get that upset while driving to throw items at another car or even worse, fire a gun at someone,” said MSP Lt. Mike Shaw. “We were lucky no one was hit and our goal now will be to get this person off our roads and the gun out of their hands.”
