One person is dead and two others are injured after a chaotic chase and shootout with police on Interstate 5 on Sunday.

Officers responded just after 3 p.m. to a report of a shooting at a gas station in Coburg and arrived to find the suspects had fled, according to a release issued by the Oregon State Police.

At about 6 p.m., a vehicle of interest was spotted by troopers in Linn and Lane counties, who then chased the suspect vehicle as it drove north. Officers used a spike strip on the freeway, causing the fleeing vehicle to crash along the freeway shoulder. A shootout with officers from multiple agencies followed, and the driver of the vehicle was killed on the scene, according to the release.

Another person who was a passenger inside the vehicle was injured and taken to an area hospital. No officers were injured.

Police released few details about the initial shooting but said the victim survived but was critically injured and hospitalized.

During the chase, the interstate was closed to traffic in both directions and traffic was locked up for several hours while officers began multiple investigations into the initial shooting, the chase and the officer-involved shooting.

The state police had assigned its Major Crimes Team to investigate the initial shooting in Coburg. The Albany Police Department was assigned to investigate the officer-involved shooting.

All officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave, pending the results of the investigation.
