Suspect in custody after man stabbed multiple times at trolley station

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A 36-year-old man was found covered in blood at a trolley station in the South Bay overnight and the suspect was arrested in a stolen vehicle Saturday afternoon.

According to the Chula Vista Police Department (CVPD), officers were conducting patrols in the area of the Palomar Trolley Station, located at 1265 Industrial Blvd. in Chula Vista, around 2:20 a.m. Saturday when they discovered the victim.

Police said the man had been stabbed multiple times but was conscious and able to communicate with officers at the scene. He was transported to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries and is expected to recover.

Based on their preliminary investigation, CVPD said it appears the victim was a homeless individual who was sleeping on the premises when attacked. Authorities believe it was unprovoked.

CVPD in an update Saturday evening that the suspect, identified as 34-year-old Tulio Gasca of Imperial Beach, was arrested around 4 p.m. Saturday after reportedly stealing a vehicle from the 500 block of Moss Street in Chula Vista.

According to CVPD, the victim of the car theft told police he watched as his vehicle was being stolen and that he was able to follow his vehicle and call police.

The driver of the stolen vehicle was identified as Gasca and was placed under arrested at the time for vehicle theft.

Investigators later learned Gasca is also believed to be the person captured in security footage at the Palomar Trolley Station early Saturday morning. He was booked into the San Diego County Jail and is facing attempted murder and vehicle theft-related charges.
