Police resume search after human remains found in Long Island park

BABYLON, N.Y. (PIX11) – Investigators were expected to resume their search Friday morning after human remains were discovered in a Long Island park Thursday.

A high school-aged girl on her way to school stumbled upon an arm severed at the bicep in the brush along Siegel Boulevard, which runs alongside Southards Pond Park in Babylon, around 8:40 a.m., according to authorities. The arm is believed to have belonged to a man. It has a distinct tattoo and the fingertips are missing.

K9s and police officers then uncovered other limbs in separate spots across the 19-acre recreation area, which is surrounded by schools, according to authorities.

A police cadaver dog searching the western side of the park found a leg sticking out of a pile of leaves on Graham Place between Beverly Road and Martin Place, authorities said. Investigators told PIX11 News the same dog also found a right arm on the eastern side of the park, about 20 feet from where the left arm was discovered.

Investigators said they haven’t identified who the body parts belong to. It remained unclear if the remains belonged to the same person.

The body parts appear to have been dumped recently, according to authorities. The tattoos could be the crucial clue to identifying the body or bodies, police said.

Two nearby schools — Babylon Memorial Grade School and Babylon Elementary School — had indoor recess on Thursday as a precautionary measure due to the police investigation. The superintendent called the incident “extremely unsettling” in a letter to parents, but noted the investigation was unrelated to the schools.

Mental health resources are available to students in the Babylon School District.
