Atlanta police, organizers outline safety plans for Peachtree Road Race 10K on July Fourth
ATLANTA (AP) -- Police say nearly every section of Atlanta's Peachtree Road Race will be watched by surveillance cameras and officers from multiple agencies next week.
Police Chief George Turner said Thursday that law enforcement and race organizers consulted with Boston Marathon officials and organizers of a Colorado race to incorporate their security suggestions.
The July Fourth event is one of the world's largest 10-kilometer races. Atlanta Track Club Executive Director Tracey Russell says 60,000 runners will compete and 3,400 volunteers will work the event — up from last year.
Turner says every officer in the department will be on duty between July 3 and 5, and will work 12-hour shifts. Spectators are being asked to refrain from bringing backpacks and other large items.
