Police: Phoenix baby bent in half by father has died

A six-month-old child died after his father reportedly bent him in half to keep him from crying.

Robert Anthony Resendiz, 30, was arrested on Dec.19 after his son was rushed to Phoenix Children's Hospital with injuries doctors describe as "not survivable," KPHO reported.

Resendiz called police to his home at 12:45 p.m. after he claimed to have just woken up and found his baby son "unresponsive and not breathing," according to a police officer's arrest report.

An officer performed CPR on the child until paramedics arrived.

Doctors told police later that the infant suffered lacerations to his pancreas and liver, a wrist fracture and bruises on his thigh.

According to CBS News, in an interview with police, Resendiz "admitted to pressing the infant's legs over his head and bending his body in order to stop the victim from crying," the police report stated. He also allegedly told police he exerted about 65 percent of his strength while applying pressure to his son and didn't release until his son was limp and stopped moving.

"Robert also stated he had bit the infant two times on the body out of frustration," the officer added in his report.

Resendiz's son reportedly died on Dec. 21, two days after initially receiving medical care.

The father was initially booked on suspicion of felony child abuse, but the charges could change following his son's death, KPHO reported.

Resendiz is being held in jail on a $250,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
