A policeman stopped his in the middle of a busy motorway to rescue a dog that had been hit by a car.

Joseph Puglia’s dash-cam recorded the incident on Florida's Interstate 275 in Tampa.

He told ABC Action News that his heart “really sank, until I started seeing him breathing”.

After finding the unconscious creature in the outside lane and realising it was still alive, Mr Puglia wrapped it in an emergency blanket and put it into his vehicle.

The dog, nicknamed Lucky, survived with minor injuries and has been taken to an animal shelter.

Mr. Puglia said that his family is willing to adopt the dog if no-one claims for it.
