POLICE NEWS: Goshen man injured in Wednesday crash

Apr. 25—A moped driver is in serious condition following a crash on the south end of Goshen Wednesday afternoon.

Goshen police report that at 3:43 p.m. Wednesday Darwin Brandau, 60, Goshen, said he was turning left from Lincolnway East in a gray 2010 Ford Fusion onto College Avenue.

Brandau said a truck traveling north had stopped across from him at the intersection and so he proceeded to turn east onto College Avenue, but a moped, driven by Ronald Butler, 49, Goshen, appeared from the right side of the stopped truck, and the two vehicles collided.

A witness said the moped driven by Butler was lane-splitting and had a red light but passed through anyway, while the car had a yellow light.

When officers arrived, they noted that someone in the crowd of people surrounding him on the ground had placed a belt as a tourniquet on his leg, which was broken with his femur exposed. He was, however, alert and speaking. Butler was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital for treatment, and also cited for disregarding a traffic signal.

Four-vehicle crash injures two

Two drivers complained of pain following a four-vehicle chain-reaction crash at U.S. 33 and C.R. 138, near Goshen, at 7:26 a.m. Tuesday.

According to a report from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office, a 2010 Ford Edge driven by Debra Bobeck, 58, Millersburg, was northbound on U.S. 33, when it collided with the rear of a 2021 Honda Accord. The Accord, driven by Michael Delucenay, 67, Syracuse, was stopped in a line of traffic. It was pushed into the rear of a 2015 Dodge Dart driven by Jerry Stoner, 58, Ligonier, which in turn collided with the rear of a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Kaylin Ritchie, 30, Ligonier.

Bobeck and Delucenay complained of pain. the report did not state if they needed medical attention.

Bobeck was cited for distracted driving.

Two injured in morning crash

Two drivers were injured in a crash in front of McDonald's on Elkhart Road in Goshen at 6:36 a.m. Thursday.

According to Goshen police, Donald Waldrop, 62, Goshen, was northbound on Elkhart Road in the turn lane in a 2011 Kia Sorento. He turned left from the center lane off of Elkhart Road to pull into the McDonald's parking lot. As he was turning, his vehicle and a 2011 Nissan Versa collided. The Versa was driven by Tyrell Nye, 35, Goshen, and was southbound on Elkhart Road. The impact caused the Sorento roll onto its top, police reported.

Waldrop, who had to be removed from his car, had pain to his chest and knee and was evaluated by Goshen paramedics at the scene.

Nye had pain and a possible broken right wrist. He was also assessed by medics.

ARRESTS

* A 36-year-old man was arrested by Goshen police at 10:47 a.m. Wednesday on a charge of leaving the scene of a property damage crash in the 300 block of Steury Avenue.

* A 44-year-old man was arrested by Goshen police at 6:53 p.m. Wednesday on charges of possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance, and false informing after police stopped him for failure to stop at a stop sign and driving on the wrong side of the road at First Street and River Avenue.

BURGLARY

Goshen police responded to a burglary at Janus Motorcycles, 211 S. 5th St., at 1:30 a.m. Thursday. Forced entry was noted.

OFFICERS REPORT

* A 24-year-old man reported to Elkhart County deputies at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday finding a firearm in a vehicle in the 30000 block of Old. U.S. 33 in Elkhart. It was taken into evidence for safekeeping.

* A five-year-old child walked into Murphy USA gas station, 30898 Old U.S. 20 at 7:12 p.m. Wednesday, and Elkhart County deputies were told by a witness that the child wasn't sure where her parents were.

INJURED WILDLIFE

Goshen police were called to the 2100 block of Wilden Avenue at 8:55 a.m. Wednesday for an injured wild animal.

THEFT

* A 70-year-old woman reported to Goshen police at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday someone took her license plate off her vehicle sometime in the last four months.

* A 27-year-old man reported to Goshen police that on Sunday tools and vehicle parts were stolen from his home in the 1700 block of Mayfield Drive.

* A 35-year-old woman reported to Elkhart County deputies that between 1 p.m. April 20 and 5 p.m. April 22 someone stole her Borden trash can from the 19000 block of U.S. 20 in Bristol.

* A 54-year-old woman reported to Elkhart County deputies at 7:35 a.m. Wednesday someone stole her Jeep Compass overnight. It was later found, having been used in a burglary.

* U-Haul, 29057 Old U.S. 33, reported to Elkhart County deputies that on April 14 a customer rented a van and didn't return it at the contracted time.

CRIMINAL MISCHIEF

A 41-year-old woman reported to Elkhart County deputies that someone she knew defaced her vehicle by ripping a door handle off and scratching it in the 13000 block of C.R. 20 in Middlebury.

FRAUD

A 57-year-old woman reported to Elkhart County deputies that between 8 a.m. April 18 and 3:30 p.m. April 20 someone committed fraud.
