Police: Motorcyclist dead, driver arrested after impairment suspected in North Las Vegas crash

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A woman was arrested and faces DUI charges after a crash left a motorcyclist dead in North Las Vegas, according to police.

It happened shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Thursday near Owens Avenue and James Street near Civic Center.

Once officers arrived they determined the collision involved a blue Harley Davidson motorcycle and a brown 2011 Chevrolet HHR. The motorcycle rider, a 29-year-old male, was ejected from the motorcycle after the collision and appeared to have serious injuries but once a medical team arrived they pronounced the motorcyclist dead, North Las Vegas police said.

During the preliminary investigation officers determined that the Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling westbound on Owens Avenue at a high rate of speed. During that time the Chevrolet HHR was stopped westbound on Owens Avenue, near James Street, in the center turn lane.

“The Harley Davidson attempted to pass around other vehicles by swerving into the center median. The Harley Davidson then struck the rear of the Chevrolet, causing the motorcycle rider to be ejected from the motorcycle,” North Las Vegas police said.

The 43-year-old female driver of the Chevrolet was uninjured but showed signs of impairment and was arrested. She was booked into the North Las Vegas Community Correctional Center on the charges of DUI, felony child endangerment, and other traffic-related offenses, according to police.

Traffic officers continue to investigate the collision where speed and no motorcycle license endorsement are believed to be factors on the motorcyclist and impairment being a factor on the driver of the Chevrolet, police said.

Anyone who may have information about this collision is urged to contact the North Las Vegas Police Department by phone at 702-633-9111. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers by phone at 702-385 -5555
