Police: Man shot, killed during apparent robbery at package store in New Haven

A 61-year-old man was shot and killed during an attempted robbery at a package store in New Haven on Tuesday, according to the New Haven Police Department.

Police responded to a shooting victim in the GI Package Store parking lot on Ferry Street after 9 p.m. Tuesday and located Mark Pappacoda of New Haven lying on the ground unresponsive.

Pappacoda was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital where he died from his injuries, police said.

Police obtained surveillance video of the incident where the suspect is seen attempting to rob Pappacoda before shooting him, police said.

This is the 10th homicide of the year, down 59% from the 24 reported homicides at this time in 2021, according to New Haven Officer Scott Shumway. There has been a 5% increase in non-fatal shootings with 102 in New Haven this year, up from 97 at this time in 2021, he said.
