BCPD: Man in custody after barricading inside home

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — Police say a man is in custody and is receiving appropriate medical treatment after barricading himself inside a Battle Creek home for five hours Thursday during a mental health crisis.

Just before 3 p.m., officers with the Battle Creek Police Department responded to the home on Lathrop Avenue near Euclid Street. Police say they heard a gunshot from inside. They say nobody was hurt. Then, the man came outside, slammed the door and went back inside, according to BCPD.

Officers blocked the area surrounding the home and worked to communicate with the man, who, they said, was experiencing a mental health crisis.

According to BCPD, the man fired several more gunshots inside the house and shot at police through the window. Police say the shots did not hit anyone or damage any other homes or property.

Then, the Emergency Response Team released gas into the home, prompting the man to come outside and surrender around 8 p.m., police say. He was taken into custody.

Charges are pending against the man, according to BCPD.
