Police investigating suspicious death of man in Serra Mesa

SAN DIEGO — Authorities are investigating the suspicious death of a man in San Diego’s Serra Mesa neighborhood Thursday night, police said.

Officers from the San Diego Police Department’s Eastern Division responded to the scene just before 6 p.m. after residents heard a gunshot coming from an apartment in the area. According to SDPD, authorities arrived to find an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body.

First responders immediately began first aid on the individual, described as a 35-year-old man, before he was transported to a nearby hospital, where authorities say he was later pronounced dead. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.

SDPD Homicide Detectives were then called to the scene, the department said “due to the unusual circumstances surrounding the death of the (man) and in an abundance of caution.”

An investigation into the suspicious death remains ongoing. According to SDPD, detectives are still in the process of examining physical evidence at the scene, interviewing witnesses and canvassing the area for surveillance footage.

At this stage, the events that led up to the man’s death remain unclear. However, police say a firearm was recovered at the scene, and there appeared to have been some type of argument between the man and a woman.

The identity of the woman has been determined, but SDPD is withholding her name while they determine if she had a role in the incident.
