Police investigating accidental shooting that left teen injured in St. Gabriel

ST. GABRIEL, La. (BRPROUD) – The St. Gabriel Police Department is investigating a shooting that happened around 8:52 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21.

Officers were called to the 1800 block of Bayou Paul Lane and found a teenager with a gunshot wound.

The 17-year-old male was taken to a local hospital via Acadian Ambulance Air-Med. SGPD said he remains in critical condition.

“At this time this incident is believed to be an accidentally self-inflicted injury due to mishandling of a loaded weapon,” according to SGFD.

Officers subsequently found a loaded weapon on the property.

It was “reported stolen days earlier out of St. Gabriel,” SGFD said. The investigation into that case remains ongoing.

SFGD said “charges are expected to be filed in reference to the stolen weapon and illegal discharge of the weapon upon the victim’s recovery and discharge from doctor’s care.”

The investigation into the accidental shooting also remains ongoing.

Police are also investigating a shooting that injured a woman in Baton Rouge on Sunday, May 19. The shooting happened in the 4400 block of Cannon Street, BRPD said.
