Police investigating fatal shooting at San Jose homeless encampment

(KRON) — The San Jose Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred at a homeless encampment last week. SJPD patrol officers responded at 5:46 p.m. on Thursday, May 9 to a report of a shooting at the encampment in the area of Mclaughlin Avenue and Highway 280.

Officers found an unconscious man who was suffering from a gunshot wound and was not breathing. First responders administered lifesaving measures and transported the victim to the hospital.

He was stabilized but remained in critical condition, according to SJPD. The suspect fled the scene prior to officers arriving.

On Sunday, SJPD was notified that the victim had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The incident is now being investigated by the San Jose PD Homicide Unit.

Motive and circumstances related to the investigation are also under investigation. The victim’s identity is being withheld by the coroner’s office pending victim identification and notification of next of kin.

The incident marks the city’s 13th homicide of the year.
