Police investigating after 2 killed in Tampa shooting

Police are investigating after two adults were killed in a shooting Friday morning in Tampa.

About 10:30 a.m., the Tampa Police Department received three ShotSpotter notifications in the area of North Nebraska Avenue and East 26th Avenue, Police Department spokesperson Jonee Lewis told WFLA.

The first units arrived at 10:32 a.m., Lewis said. Officers found a man and a woman shot, and community members were attempting to perform lifesaving measures, Lewis said.

Police performed CPR, but the man and the woman were pronounced dead at the scene. Lewis said police were still working to identify a suspect.

Lewis said the incident started with a group of people gathered in the area, and the man and the woman were involved with the suspect before shots were fired.

“At this time, it doesn’t appear to be random,” Lewis said. “But of course, anyone that is a victim of violence in our community is definitely concerning to us. Our overall violent crime has been down. We know that there tends to be a spike over the summer months. So we’re out here trying to figure out what’s going on, hoping the community will help give us additional information.”

Nebraska Avenue was closed between East Plymouth Street and 26th Avenue. Around noon, Hillsborough State Attorney Suzy Lopez was on the scene, as well as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

No further information was immediately available.
