Police investigate deadly shooting at home in Northwest Indiana

PORTAGE, Ind. — Authorities in Northwest Indiana say a homicide investigation is underway after a man was found fatally shot at a home in Portage early Monday morning.

Portage police were initially called to the scene in the 5300 block of Aspen Avenue, just after 12:30 a.m., following a report of a shooting in the area.

Officers arrived on the scene and found a man inside the home with an apparent gunshot wound. Authorities attempted life-saving measures on the victim, but he later succumbed to his injuries.

The deadly shooting sparked a police investigation and officers say a person of interest has been identified.

Police have not identified or provided an update on the search for the person of interest.

Officers said the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident and authorities do not believe there is an active threat to the community.

According to police, the victim is believed to be a man from Hammond, Indiana, and his identity will be made public once the coroner’s office notifies his family.
