Police identify crash victim, condition unknown

May 2—Police on Thursday identified Diane Collins, 59, of Crawfordsville, as the woman critically injured in a crash on U.S. 52 Wednesday.

Collins was listed in stable but critical condition in the St. Vincent Indianapolis intensive care unit, Boone County Police Detective Morganne Carpenter said. Her condition Thursday was unclear. A spokeswoman for St. Vincent did not find her listed, which can happen when a patient is unable to sign documents on admittance.

Collins was a passenger in a car driven by Crystal M. Crowder, 43, of Crawfordsville. The car crashed and overturned at about 10:30 a.m. for reasons not immediately clear to police.

Collins was ejected and the car landed on her in the 4500 block of N. U.S. 52, Boone County Deputy Tyler Moriarty said in a news statement.

Local authorities were still working with Montgomery County police Thursday afternoon to find and tell Collins' family about her injuries, Carpenter said.

Crowder was taken to Witham Hospital for a blood sample, as is standard for drivers involved in serious crashes. And she was treated for non-life threatening injuries, Carpenter said. Boone County Sheriff's personnel then drove her directly to the Hendricks County Jail.

She was charged in March in Hendricks County with possession of 10-28 grams of cocaine and obstruction of justice and was wanted on a warrant.

Crowder also faces two pending cocaine possession cases in Montgomery County that were filed in October 2023 and April of this year.

The interdepartmental Boone County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team is investigating Wednesday's crash, per county protocol for serious accidents.
