Police ID boy, 8, who was hit and killed in Queens crosswalk

QUEENS, N.Y. (PIX11) — Authorities have identified the 8-year-old boy who was hit and killed in a Queens crosswalk on Wednesday, police said.

Bayron Palomino Arroyo and his 10-year-old brother were struck by a Nissan Titan in the crosswalk at 31st Avenue and 100th Street in East Elmhurst at 4:15 p.m., according to the NYPD.

The driver, Jose Barcia, 52, was making a left turn at the corner after driving around a car in front of him when he allegedly hit the two boys crossing the street on 100th Street, police and sources said. The pedestrians had the right of way, police said.

Palomino Arroyo was hit by the Nissan’s front and rear tires and sustained severe head and bodily injuries, according to the NYPD. The boy died at the scene and his brother was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, police said.

The boys’ mother, who narrowly missed getting hit herself, was left screaming in the street, another driver told PIX11 News.

Barcia remained at the scene and called 911. He was later arrested and charged with criminally negligent homicide, failure to yield to a pedestrian, failure to exercise due care, and excessive speeding, police said.

The Queens District Attorney’s Office will be prosecuting the case.

Barcia has a valid driver’s license but also has previous driving-related arrests, according to sources.

The investigation is ongoing.
