Police: Hanover man made up story about being forced to withdraw money from ATM and robbed

A Hanover man who claimed to be the victim of a robbery is now facing charges himself, with police now saying the man made the story up.

Raymond Perry, 63, of Hanover, faces misdemeanor charges of unsworn falsification to authorities and false incrimination as a result of he reported had occurred on the morning of Saturday, May 4, according to court documents filed Friday.

Perry had claimed to officers that on the morning of May 4, while walking on the 100 block of Carlisle Street, after being offered a ride, he had been held at gunpoint upon entering a vehicle. Then, he had claimed, he was driven to an ATM and forced to withdraw money.

Perry had claimed that the three individuals holding him at gunpoint were men in their 20s.

"Through further investigation it was determined that the robbery did not occur," said the Borough Police Department in a news release.

A preliminary hearing for Perry is set for July 9, 2024.
