Security camera captured son stabbing stepfather multiple times in Lawrence home, docs say

Update: This article was updated May 2, 2022 with more information about the deceased.

A man accused of killing his stepdad in Lawrence is preliminary charged with murder after police say a home security camera captured him stabbing the 74-year-old multiple times “immediately” after his stepfather opened the front door of the home, court records said.

Lawrence police officers on Saturday were called to a house, in the 12500 block of Teacup Way, shortly after 9:30 a.m. Dispatchers said the original call to 911 came from a man who said he “needed help” in regards to his stepson.

Police in a preliminary probable cause affidavit said officers found a man, later identified as Eric Futrell, standing in the driveway near a large knife on the ground with blood on his hands. Inside, police found 74-year-old Bobbie Hill with multiple stab wounds.

Emergency medical personnel took Hill to a hospital where he later died.

Police said detectives arrived to the house and Futrell, 47, requested a lawyer and did not say anything else.

Police in the affidavit said the security system of the home where Hill lived showed the door bell ringing about 9:30 a.m. that morning. Immediately after Hill answered, police said Futrell is seen stabbing him multiple times. Investigators estimate Futrell remained inside the entryway for roughly 30 seconds, then returned outside.

Futrell is booked in the Marion County Jail on a preliminary murder charge. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will determine final charges.
