UPDATE: Police chase of stolen motorcycle ends with deadly crash in Bedford County

UPDATE: 4/23 BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office has released new details after a police chase ended in a deadly motorcycle crash on April 20.

Deputies said around 11:30 p.m. on April 19, a patrol deputy observed a Harley Davidson going over 100 mph on Route 24. The deputy turned on his emergency lights and attempted to stop the motorcycle. However, the rider, 46-year-old Travis Wayne Perdue, of Thaxton, refused and a chase began.

As the pursuit continued, deputies said Perdue maintained a speed of over 100 mph and ultimately lost control at the intersection of Gooview Road and Route 24. The motorcycle then crashed into a Subaru and Perdue and the passenger 35-year-old-old Michael Billy Bishop were thrown from the motorcycle.

As we previously reported, Perdue and Bishop were taken to the hospital where they died from their injuries.

The driver of the Subaru was taken to the hospital for treatment. Her condition is unknown at this time.

The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were not injured during the chase.

As the investigation continued, deputies learned the Harley Davidson was confirmed to be stolen out of Lynchburg.

The crash remains under investigation by Virginia State Police.



BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Virginia State Police (VSP) have opened an investigation after two people were killed and one person was injured during a police chase in Bedford County on April 20.

The crash occurred around 11:37 p.m. on Route 24 at the intersection of Goodview Road. VSP said police were pursuing two people riding a stolen 2013 Harley Davidson when the bike hit a Subaru, making a left turn.

Both riders were thrown from the motorcycle and taken to the hospital. They later died from their injuries.

Motorcyclist sustains serious injuries in crash on Hershberger Road NW

The driver of the Harley Davidson was identified as 46-year-old Travis Wayne Perdue, of Thaxton, and the passenger was identified as 35-year-old-old Michael Billy Bishop, from Blue Ridge.

The driver of the Subaru was taken to the hospital for treatment.

VSP confirmed that Perdue and Bishop were both wearing helmets.

Troopers said speed was a factor in the crash.
