Police car transporting injured child crashes in Hazleton

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Police say an officer was involved in a crash while transporting a child to the hospital who had been hit by a car.

According to the Hazleton City Police Department, on Friday around 1:00 p.m., officers were flagged down to help a woman claiming her child was hit by a car and lying in the roadway, not moving.

It was like a fast situation, said Densilson Nina.

According to the release, Officers drove the child and their family to Lehigh Valley Hospital Hazleton.

While on the way to the hospital, the police cruiser and an SUV collided, shutting down West Broad Street between Wyoming Street and Laurel Street.

“I could see him from my room window. I just woke up and I heard the screams and stuff and I woke up and I saw what was going on but I didn’t know what was going on at that time.I saw him get in the cop car,” explained Nina.

Police say the family asked the police officer to transport the injured child to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton.

At this time we do not know exactly how many people were involved in the accident.

We also were not able to get an update on the condition of the child injured, the police officer who was driving the car, or the driver of the s.U.V.

This incident is now under investigation.
