Police arrest Sri Lanka navy officer over disappearances

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — A report says a Sri Lankan naval intelligence official has been arrested for alleged involvement in the abduction and forced disappearance of two ethnic Tamil civilians during the island nation's civil war.

The state-run Daily News newspaper reports that Lt. Cmdr. Sampath Dayananda was arrested Wednesday and detained for questioning.

The report says investigators testified in court that five suspects including Dayananda took jewelry, cash and mobile phones from victims during their abductions outside the capital of Colombo in 2009.

Sri Lankan security forces are accused of abducting ethnic Tamil civilians in the guise of anti-terror activities during the civil war.

The conflict ended in May 2009 when government troops defeated ethnic Tamil rebels.
