Police arrest suspect in mass stabbing that left 3 dead, 11 injured at Guam resort
HAGATNA, Guam (AP) -- A man accused of killing three people and injuring 11 after crashing his car and stabbing people in a major tourist district in Guam was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, police said Wednesday.
The Pacific Daily News reports (http://goo.gl/8qxzk) police have arrested 21-year-old Chad Ryan Desoto of Tamuning.
The wreck and alleged knife attack Tuesday night at a shopping area at the Outrigger Guam Resort sent frightened hotel guests fleeing for safety.
Fire officials say a total of 14 people were taken to Guam Memorial Hospital.
Antonio Mura, a spokesman for the Guam Visitor Bureau, said an initial report from Guam police indicated the victims were Japanese visitors. The agency sent Japanese language interpreters to the hospital to help.
Guam Gov. Eddie Calvo issued a statement addressed to "the people of Japan" saying the perpetrator would be prosecuted "to the fullest extent of the law." Calvo said he is committed to ensuring the safety of visitors to Guam and would increase the police presence in the visitor district even further.
"This was an isolated incident — something that just doesn't happen in our community," Calvo said. "We are shocked, we are grieving with the families, and we extend our deepest condolences to those hurt."

A woman at a nearby café with friends told the newspaper that she saw the car plow through the driveway and into an ABC Store fronting the resort. Ashley Quichocho, 18, of Dededo says the driver got out, ran up to bystanders and began stabbing them.
"He started stabbing someone, and I started freaking out," Quichocho said. "He was just running back and forth stabbing people."
Quichocho said she ran to the second floor of the hotel with other guests to escape.
The incident occurred in the Pleasure Island district of high-end boutiques and stores in Tumon Bay. ABC Stores is a chain of convenience stores based in Honolulu.
Guam is a U.S. territory 1,500 miles south of Tokyo and 3,700 miles southeast of Hawaii.
