Police arrest Hartsville teacher accused of inappropriate contact with a minor

HARTSVILLE, S.C. (WBTW) — A Hartsville teacher was arrested Friday after authorities issued an arrest warrant for him for allegedly having inappropriate contact with a minor.

Gilbert Burgess is a teacher at Butler Academy, a public charter school located on 5th Street in Hartsville, police said. He was charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor 11-14 years old.

Police said the allegations stem from a March 30 incident at the Hartsville Memorial Library, where Burgess was tutoring the student outside of school hours. The student was not enrolled at the academy.

“Due to the sensitive and ongoing nature of the investigation, we cannot release further details at this time,” a police spokesperson said.

Anyone with information about Burgess is asked to contact Hartsville police detective April Tyner at 843-206-4073.
