"On March 26, we are activating as co-leaders, Poland and Germany, the armour capability coalition for support of Ukraine," the Polish minister told reporters at a joint press conference with Pistorius.

"It is one of the most important coalitions that have been established; we are the two leading countries of this project, other partners have signed up for it, such as Great Britain, Sweden, and Italy," he said.

Kosiniak-Kamysz noted that personal participation of Pistorius in the work with Poland is a sign of friendship, partnership and "thinking about what to do today to help Ukraine" as well as working for the security of Europe, NATO countries and "our civilization and our future."

He called the cooperation within NATO and the EU fundamental for European security and stressed that it would be strengthened and developed further.

Pistorius stressed the importance of being prepared for any situation. "Nobody really knows whether or when Russia will [attack anybody] in Europe, but what we really see is that it is able and willing to attack Ukraine and is doing it now for more than two years," the German Defence Minister said.

"So what we have to learn all together as allies in Europe is to be prepared for any threat, especially for a threat which comes from Putin's Russia in any year. This is a task we have to do and this is what we are working on," he added.

He also stressed the importance of supplying Ukraine with sufficient defensive and offensive capabilities in the form of ammunition and armament.

Background:

  • The UK and Latvia lead the international "drone coalition", created within the Contact Group for Ukraine’s Defence, better known as the Ramstein format.

  • Rishi Sunak, Prime Minister of the UK, announced during his visit to Kyiv in January that London would allocate £200 million to manufacture various drones for the Ukrainian military.
