Pointe Coupee Parish sheriff, Louisiana AG assess tornado damage, pass out resources

POINTE COUPEE PARISH, La. (BPROUD) — The clouds are gone, and the sun is out, but much debris is left behind from a tornado that swept through Pointe Coupee Parish.

Attorney General Liz Murrill and Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff Rene’ Thibodeaux are out assessing the damage and talking to those impacted by the storm that blew across Louisiana.

“I never experienced anything like that before in my life,” said Gregory Victorian, father of homeowner in New Roads.

Victorian says his daughter and her husband woke up Wednesday morning to strong winds. Moments later, a tornado hit New Roads.

“They went to the other, to the other end of the trailer and when they got to the other end the tree fell,” said Victorian.

Entergy Louisiana, DEMCO crews still working to restore power after storms

The veteran is still in disbelief.

“This is my first time coming and I didn’t even want to come look at it,” said Victorian.

As Thibodeaux and his deputies move through the parish they’re finding more damage. Thankfully, there are no reported fatalities or serious injuries.

“The number of houses that have lost their roofs and stuff like that and the number of houses that have trees that’s fallen in them has grown twice,” said Thibodeaux.

According to Myron Lambert, CEO of Pointe Coupee Electric company, this storm caused more electrical damage than a hurricane. It was confirmed that an EF1 tornado passed through Pointe Coupee and West Feliciana Parishes at 100 mph.

For many families, the next step is seeking disaster relief aid. Murrill shares tips on avoiding insurance scams.

“Ask people for their I.D. Don’t give them cash. Get multiple estimates,” said Murrill.

Murrill says it’s better to be safe than sorry.

“We don’t want to see anybody become more of a victim than they already are from the weather, said Murrill.

Thibodeaux says power on the main grid has been restored but there are still several communities throughout the parish that remain powerless. He says when he talked to electric companies, they found about 15 to 17 broken poles and are working as quickly as they can to restore power.

Lambert says 1,400 people remain without power as of Thursday evening.
