ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Prime Minister Stephen Harper's trip to 5 Wing Goose Bay in Labrador is raising hopes for a long promised military expansion on the largely vacant base.
The Prime Minister's Office has confirmed that details are being finalized for a brief visit and announcement on Friday.
It was news to Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Kathy Dunderdale, who said she hadn't received a courtesy call.
But Dunderdale says she would be happy to attend if Harper plans to make good on a six-year-old pledge to increase military personnel at the airbase.
Harper has spoken in the past of a rapid-reaction team for the once busy site, or of flying unmanned drones from Goose Bay.
He has not taken action, but a recent newspaper report said Harper has written twice this year to Defence Minister Peter MacKay about expanding the base.
