Plea bargain reached for man charged with drive-by shooting

A man charged in connection with a 2022 shooting case has been sentenced to prison. Here's what we know:

Defendant: Jarrett Allen Vining, 21.

Judge: Circuit Judge Peter Brigham.

Lawyers: Vining's lawyer was Michael J. Gourley, and Assistant State Attorney Janine Nixon prosecuted the case.

Charges: Shooting at or within or into a dwelling, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and carrying a concealed firearm.

What was the outcome? In a hearing held April 25, the judge accepted the terms of a plea negotiation: 18 months in prison, with 187 days of credit for time served while at the county jail. Vining also must submit a DNA sample,. He pleaded no contest to the charges.

About the case: Ocala Police Department officers arrested Vining and three others, one of them his brother, in 2022 after officials said the foursome were in a vehicle and participated in a drive-by shooting at a residence.

Authorities, who were not far away from the incident location, stopped the vehicle. Firearms were found in the vehicle and the occupants were taken into custody. Court records show two others connected with the incident have been sentenced.
