This year’s playoffs are showing Broncos need offense
Defense wins championships, but the winner of Super Bowl 51 will officially be a team with an offensive-dominant identity, lead by an elite quarterback.
So no, the Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs are not here to show you that the best defense wins a championship. The Chiefs went home because Ben Roethlisberger’s Pittsburgh Steelers moved the ball just enough to set up enough field goals. The Seattle Seahawks Legion of Boom was destroyed by Matt Ryan’s high-flying Atlanta Falcons offense.
Though everyone expected it, the number-one ranked Houston Texans defense was no match for Tom Brady’s New England Patriots. They’re on their way out. Out of all the remaining teams, the Green Bay Packer’s offense is ranked the “worst”. They’re eighth in the NFL in yards per game (368.8), with 27 points per game.
So there you have it. The Broncos won Super Bowl 50 last year, but they missed the playoffs this year because their offense was incredibly frustrating. Not once this season was anyone convinced that it going to be something special.
Now, what’s the whole point I’m making? The Broncos should be watching the playoffs this year and realize an above-average quarterback is all you need to go far in the postseason. Oh, but with the Broncos defense, any above-average quarterback turns them into a legitimate contender.
39-year-old Peyton Manning in 2015 was better than Trevor Siemian in 2016. The Broncos at least had a future Hall of Famer guiding the offense and leading this team. Denver is reliny far too much on Siemian. And you think Paxton Lynch is ready right now? I’m not buying it.
The Broncos have to think about how to restructure the offense. No matter how they do it, they need to make the big moves. Maybe Tony Romo won’t be a Bronco, but the offensive line and wide receiver classes in free agency are both stacked.
