Northwest Missouri State players Cole Forney and Jacob Vollstedt suffered injuries after the car they were driving in on a Missouri interstate hit a slick spot and overturned Tuesday night.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Forney was driving his truck south on I-29 where it slid off the road after hitting the slick spot. The truck then hit a concrete barrier. Per Kansas City’s Fox 4, Forney was ejected from the truck while Vollstedt was still inside as it overturned and burst into flames after impact.

Forney suffered serious injuries in the crash and, per Northwest Missouri State coach Rich Wright, was transferred from a hospital in St. Joseph, Missouri to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. Wright said Vollstedt had been released.

Northwest Missouri State won its second-straight Division II championship in December with a title game win over North Alabama. Coach Adam Dorrel left the school to become the coach at Abilene Christian shortly after the title game and Wright was promoted to be the coach.

A senior in 2016, Vollstedt was the team’s leading tackler in 2016. The linebacker had 140 tackles and a whopping 25 tackles for loss and could get a look by NFL teams over the spring and summer. Forney didn’t record a defensive statistic in 2016 according to Northwest’s site but had 39 tackles in 2015.
