Plans in the works for new Taco Bell in Berks

May 16—Plans are in the works for a new Taco Bell along Route 222, also known as Lancaster Pike, in Cumru Township.

A proposal to build a new 2,700-square-foot building with dual drive-thru lanes was reviewed by the Cumru Township Planning Commission at a meeting Monday, May 6.

The store would be in the area of 2255 Lancaster Pike, near Ollie's Bargain Outlet and the former Giant/Pathmark site, according to Jeanne Johnston, township manager.

It would be built on a five-acre lot subdivided into its own property, with an address to be established, according to project engineer Bryan Cleary, The Pettit Group LLC, New Jersey.

Cleary said a ballpark estimate would have construction starting in February 2025, with the store opening in May 2025.

The popular taco chain will join a handful of other Taco Bells in Berks County, including those in Wyomissing, Hyde Park in Reading, Exeter Township, Douglassville, and Hamburg.

"I think the overall reception has been enthusiastic," Johnston said of the plans. "The township welcomes further economic development in the 222 business corridor, as well as further development of an historically underutilized commercial area."

Plans for the property have yet to be formally submitted to the township, and will likely require variances from the zoning hearing board before heading to township commissioners for approval.
