Plans for the future of Kansas river access discussed

TOPEKA – (KSNT) Access to the Kansas river may be in the future for Topeka.

A community event at Grand Overland Station was held by the Topeka Riverfront Advisory Council this evening to discuss river access.

The council presented three different concepts and discussed different access points throughout the river bank. Community members who attended the public event were able to vote on their favorite concept after the presentation. Some of the concepts shared included sand volleyball, ziplining and kayak access alongside the river.

Topekans have been waiting for a solidified riverfront plan for sometime now.

When asked what what makes this year different from previous, Chairman of the Riverfront Authority council, Greg Schwerdt, told 27 News it’s the leadership that will make this the year progress is made.

“We’ve had a lot of plans over the years that have gone nowhere, and we’re now ready to move forward,” “I think we finally have the leadership at the Greater Topeka Partnership (GTP) level. We have leadership at the government level, both state, county, and city who are now actively working together to make something happen.”

The riverfront council hopes to see a completely accessible Kansas River by 2027.
