41% of flights through Denver airport canceled for Thursday snow

DENVER (KDVR) — Travelers planning to fly into or out of Denver International Airport on Thursday will likely have to come up with a plan B.

A massive storm slated to hit the Front Range on Thursday has triggered a Pinpoint Weather Alert Day, with the Pinpoint Weather team forecasting over a foot of snow in some areas.

How much snow is expected to fall during Thursday’s storm?

As of Thursday at 8:45 p.m., 830 flights had been canceled, according to FlightAware. That is about 41% of all flights coming in and out of DIA.

While several flights have been canceled, only 30 flights have been delayed.

DIA issued a statement about the storm.

“We are preparing for a severe winter storm tonight, March 13 through Friday, March 15, which may cause significant flight delays and cancellations,” airport officials posted on social media. “Team DEN will be out in full force, clearing the airfield & roads, deicing planes and assisting travelers.”

Airlines with the most cancellations

As of 8:45 p.m. Thursday:

  • Southwest Airlines: 316 flights

  • SkyWest Airlines: 205 flights

  • Frontier Airlines: 124 flights

  • United Airlines: 79 flights

  • CommuteAir: 37 flights

  • Mesa Airlines: 29 flights

  • American Airlines: 11 flights

Over half of all Southwest Airlines flights had been canceled, 91% Frontier, 90% CommuteAir and 77% SkyWest.

SkyWest, CommuteAir and Mesa primarily operate smaller, regional flights for larger carriers such as United Airlines.

How to check for cancellations

DIA’s website provides information on the status of each flight ahead of time. Travelers can search via airline, destination or flight number to get up-to-date information on their flights.

What to do if your flight is canceled, delayed

If you had a flight scheduled for Thursday that has been canceled as a result of the storm, there are a few things you can do.

The following major airlines have issued travel advisories ahead of the storm:

Typically, when an airline issues these advisories, travelers can reschedule trips without fees or fare differences. Each airline may have unique procedures, however.

The airport anticipated that March 12-30 will be particularly busy at the airport because of spring break.
