Planeview Park splash pad vandalized, closed for summer

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – One splash pad won’t open this weekend thanks to the work of vandals. The Planeview community learned today its splash pad will be closed all summer long.

There’s some frustration from parents and kids who use the splash pad at Planeview Park. The City said someone stole the copper in the equipment that controls the splash pad.

The damage is bad enough that it’s going to take time to make the repairs. The City said it also won’t make those changes until they have made the area more secure.

“First and foremost, we’re going to secure the site, or enhance the security of the site and then it will be repaired and put back into operation,” Joe Marten, who is the Aquatics Supervisor for Wichita Park & Recreation.

People who come to the park for the splash pad are concerned it will be closed all summer.

“Who would do something like that? I wanted to go there. I wanted to go there this summer and they ruined it. Yeah, that’s kind of tough, like, who would do that,” Trelynn Carr and Chase Hosen said.

“I think that’s messed up because there’s a lot of parents that need that, and for somebody to vandalize it is something that is not acceptable,” Donald Barnes said.

Marten said that City pools have security cameras, but the splash pads don’t. There’s no word yet on a dollar amount of damage, the City is still getting quotes on repair costs.

That’s not the only park not opening as planned. The City of Newton is working to fix an electrical issue at Springlake Splash Park and does not know when it will open.
