Plane engulfed in flames after crash near Gray’s Creek Airport in Cumberland County, witnesses say

GRAYS CREEK, N.C. (WNCN) — A small plane crashed and caught fire in the Gray’s Creek area south of Fayetteville in Cumberland County Sunday morning, officials said.

Officials with the Gray’s Creek Fire Department said they responded to an airplane crash near Gray’s Creek Airport along Butler Nursery Road.

A Piper PA-28-140, a single-propeller plane, struck trees before breaking apart and then catching fire, according to a Sunday afternoon statement from the National Transportation and Safety Board.

Neighbors in the area who saw the plane crash scene said the small aircraft was engulfed in flames following the incident.

Nearby residents said they ran to help the three people who were aboard when the crash happened, northeast of the airport. It is unknown if anyone was injured or where the flight originated.

“In the coming days, the wreckage will be recovered to an offsite facility for further examination,” the NTSB said.
