Plan for Jamacha sleeping cabins indefinitely paused

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A plan to build new sleeping cabins for the homeless in a community outside of Spring Valley has been indefinitely paused.

County Supervisor Nora Vargas announced Friday that feedback and concerns raised by those who live near Jamacha Road, the area where the project was supposed to be implemented, has prompted the decision to halt the plan.

How warm will it be on Memorial Day in San Diego County?

A grassy lot on the corner of Jamacha Road and the southbound 125 off-ramp is where the site was originally slated to be, with the intent of building 150 sleeping cabins for people experiencing homelessness.

That plan, however, is no more.

“Our Spring Valley community made their voices heard loud and clear: they are not ready to move forward with the sleeping cabins project on Jamacha Road. I’m very aware that for a plan like this to be successful, we must have buy-in from both the communities that are being served, and the communities where the housing is being provided. In this case, we had neither, which is why I made the decision to pause moving forward with this project,” Vargas stated in a press release detailing the decision.

The construction of the sleeping cabins was estimated to cost $18.5 million, a plan that was approved by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors back in March. On top of that, the annual operating cost was expected to be around $6 million.

Though it was supposed to be up and running sometime this year, the community’s pushback has been felt by the county and Jamacha sleeping cabins are no longer being considered at this time.

“I will continue to work collaboratively with residents, local businesses, and stakeholders to find a solution that addresses homelessness while also respecting the needs and safety of our neighborhoods,” said Vargas.
