Placer County deputy in critical condition, man dead following shooting in Colfax

(FOX40.COM) — A Placer County Sheriff’s Office deputy is in critical condition and a man is dead following a shooting in Colfax on Thursday night, according to the sheriff’s office.

“First and foremost, we want to offer our prayers and support to our deputy, who was shot during tonight’s incident, and also for his family,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a social media post. “He is currently being treated for his injuries. He is listed in critical condition but stabilized.”

The shooting occurred at 11 p.m. in the parking lot of a McDonald’s in Colfax, after deputies had attempted to investigate a van suspected of being connected to a burglary the previous day, according to the sheriff’s office.

A man in his 30s was inside the van and reportedly became uncooperative with deputies. They attempted to de-escalate the situation and that is when the suspect began shooting at deputies, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies returned fire and at some point one deputy was shot at least once and was attended to by another deputy before being taken to an area hospital.

After the area was secured by additional deputies and the sheriff’s office Special Enforcement Team was able to approach the suspect’s van where he was barricaded, the man was was pronounced dead.
