Pitt State Women has set an expectation of playing in mid-March
PITTSBURG, Ks. — College basketball in mid-March is one of the best times of the year. It’s March Madness and let the Madness begin! The Pitt State Lady Gorillas punched their ticket to the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
The Pitt State women won the MIAA tournament championship on Sunday their first title in program history. The Lady Gorillas are headed to the NCAA Division II National Tournament for the second straight year. They enter the Central Regional tournament with a 24-7 record as a four-seed.
After suffering a loss to Missouri Western on Senior Day right before the tournament, Pitt State used it as fuel and came out as MIAA tournament champions. Right now, the Lady Gorillas are peaking at the right time in March.
Sophomore guard Harper Schreiner and head coach Amanda Davied spoke about how playing in mid-March is an expectation.
Schreiner said, “Harper Schreiner said, “It’s huge for us and we pretty much have the same group that got a taste of it last year. I mean, so that was fun. And going back to it, we know kind of what to expect a little more this year. We’re super excited.”
Davied says, “Well, I think it’s great for the program as far as, you know, setting a culture and setting expectations each year that this is where we want to be. So if you can set a tradition and those are the expectations, it helps on a lot of levels. And so we’re just I’m really proud of the girls for all the efforts and all the journey that it’s taken to get here. But what we remind them, it reminded them of, it’s going to be worth it. And we kind of did a self-check the other day, like, was it worth it? And it was a resounding yes.”
The Lady Gorillas will travel to Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Oklahoma to take on the twenty-two-ranked Harding Bisons on Friday. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Sawyer Center.
