As the Deflategate saga has come to its inevitable end, the New England Patriots have come up on the bad side of the bargain. New England Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady will be suspended for the first four games of the NFL season. In Tom Brady’s place, Jimmy Garoppolo will be leading the New England Patriots’ offense.

At this point, it would seem that Roger Goodell has won the war. His ‘almighty’ power trip that he went on was ruled in his favor by the courts. One can see Goodell rubbing his hands together over the verdict and Brady’s suspension.

But does this really mean anything at all that Tom Brady has been suspended for the first quarter of the season? The obvious answer would be yes but if one thinks about it, they may see there is more to the suspension than might meet the eye.

Whether or not you like Tom Brady, whether or not you think Tom Brady was involved with deflating footballs for a competitive edge, you have to admit Brady is first and foremost a competitor. Brady’s fiery spirit can be seen on every play that the New England Patriots’ offense runs. Whether it is celebrating with Julian Edelman or Gronk after a touchdown or just correcting a lineman on a missed block, Brady is 100% in the game.

With Brady’s suspension, he is going to have four long weeks of waiting to get back on the football field. In this time, Brady will be playing back the suspension over and over, stewing about the witch hunt.

A pissed off Tom Brady is a dangerous Tom Brady. If Brady needed any more motivation outside his own competitiveness, he has found it. The New England Patriots’ quarterback is going to come back and have a chip on his shoulder. This spells bad news for the rest of the league as Brady, assumingly, will be motivated like never before.

So, Commissioner Roger Goodell, enjoy your petty victory. Come week five, Tom Brady is playing football again and will be a man on a mission.
