Pirates plan to recall prized prospect Meadows

Austin Meadows' long journey toward the big leagues is about to culminate with a promotion to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Pirates announced Thursday that they planned to recall Meadows from Triple-A Indianapolis before their Friday game against the San Diego Padres. A corresponding move will take place before the game to clear a spot on the 25-man roster.

Meadows, 23, was Pittsburgh's first-round pick (No. 9 overall) out of high school in 2013. He long has been touted as one of the organization's top minor-leaguers, and Baseball America named him this year as the best athlete and second-best prospect in the Pirates' system.

This season, Meadows is hitting .294 (37-for-126) with 10 doubles, one home run and 15 RBIs for Indianapolis. He has a seven-game hitting streak, with four doubles and seven RBIs during that span.

The Pirates said Meadows will wear No. 17.
