Pinpoint Weather: Strong storms possible late Wednesday

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Stay weather-aware; strong to severe thunderstorms may develop in Southwest and Central Virginia late Wednesday into Thursday.

Wednesday will be breezy, muggy, and hot with afternoon temperatures rising into the 80s and lower 90s. While a few morning showers cannot be ruled out, greater rain chances are anticipated between late Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning as a storm system brings scattered showers and storms to the region.

Stronger thunderstorms will have the potential to produce damaging wind gusts and large hail. Although the risk is very low, isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out. Repeated rounds of moderate to heavy rainfall could lead to localized flooding concerns. Most of the activity will occur Wednesday night into Thursday morning, so make sure to have at least two ways to receive severe weather alerts.

Much of the widespread rain will wrap up before noon on Thursday. However, isolated showers and storms are still possible during the afternoon. Breezy winds will carry in cooler air, resulting in highs in the upper 70s and middle 80s.

A few showers are possible on Friday. Otherwise, it will be less humid. Winds will be breezy with afternoon temperatures warming up into the cooler 60s and 70s.

Mother’s Day weekend looks comfortably cool with a mix of sun and clouds overhead. Isolated rain showers cannot be ruled out, but we’re not expecting a washout. Highs will reach the 60s and lower 70s under a mix of sun and clouds.
